16 of 17 people found the following review helpful An excellent drip coffee maker for travel and car camping, By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: GSI Outdoors 79480 Collapsible Java Drip Coffee Maker (Automotive) This is a compactable version of a Melitta coffee filter cone. It flattens out to a thin, but fairly wide circle. Easy to pack in a suitcase or for car camping. A little too heavy and too big for backpacking though.Takes a number 2 or 4 coffee filter and works just like the ones you have at home. When you first open it up, you'll notice a strong chemical smell. It goes away though as soon as you wash it with dishwashing soap (I use Dawn). The cone leaves no after-taste in your coffee. After a lot of use, there will be some dark staining on the cone and may smell a little of coffee. I've never put it in the dishwasher, but it's made of silicone so I don;t think the dishwasher would hurt it at all if you put it in the top rack. Comes with its own drip saucer so you're not dripping everywhere after you've made your coffee. Works just fine with bottled water dispensers that have a hot water option too, so you could take it to work too. We liked... I camp a lot in my magic bus and it's so easy to fire up the single burner Coleman, heat some water while I set this thing up over my coffee cup. Pour in the hot water and I got coffee. Easy to clean and folds down to nothing.TIP: Pour about a 1/3 of your water slowly over the coffee to let it bloom, wait a few seconds then the rest making sure you soak all the grounds. I get my water to a full boil to make sure its plenty hot. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful Excellent for car camping, but that's pretty much it., By Carne "H" (Puget Sound) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: GSI Outdoors 79480 Collapsible Java Drip Coffee Maker (Automotive) I've used this a few times when car camping. It's great to be able to bring your favorite coffee and brew it in the morning. Use a #4 filter and it shouldn't take long to make a cup.It is a little big for backpacking, especially since you'll need to bring the grounds. For backpacking, you're better off with instant for your morning caffeine. |
