As an "avid adventurer" I am always looking for more foolproof ways to start a warming campfire in the outdoors should the weather turn cold or rotten. I have owned them all--from the old-fashioned "firesteel", waterproof matches (never waterproof), and disposable butane lighters to the more modern magnesium/steel starters. This one works better than anything I've tried, and it's beautifully made. Here's what you do for a foolproof fire source: take some cotton balls (100% cotton only), smear some vaseline on them and stash them in a film cannister or old prescription bottle. When you're ready to start a fire, gather some sticks, twigs and larger dry wood, pull a cotton ball out, scratch the magnesium stick toward it as instructed, and that's all she wrote. The flame burns long enough to get a good blaze going. Might save your life, one day. 25 of 29 people found the following review helpful "MAGNESIUM FIRE STARTER", By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Aurora Fire Starter 440C with Hardened Steel Striking Blade (Silver) (Misc.) When I stumbled upon fire starters I just had to have one. Since they're relatively inexpensive and I couldn't narrow it down to one particular product, I got two of them. I figured if I didn't care for one of them I would give it away as a gift. As it turns out that's exactly what I'm going to do.Anyway, I got this one, the Black Aurora Magnesium Fire Starter 440C Blade. The other one I got is the Ultimate Survival Technologies StrikeForce Fire Started Orange. I'll call them "Black" and "Orange." The Orange appealed to me because of it's overall size and the diameter of it's flint (neither too small). It also has a little hollow portion inside the top to keep some flammable material. In addition the top is tethered to the bottom so they don't get separated. All excellent features. The advertising and description of the Black convinced me to give it a try. Maybe the word "Magnesium" or "440C" helped. Although there are far harder steels than 440C. The... I'm no boy scout and I've never started a fire with flint before. After 2 minutes of figuring how to strike the rod, I had a fire started using one of the provided cotton balls. Nice 2 piece design is ready to strike with just untwisting one connector. Easy to grip for someone who has big hands, easier for someone with small hands. Blade can be replaced and upgraded to a harder steel for around 6 bucks.Sure it doesn't look as good or be as small as some of the other fire starters out there. I want something I can start a fire with when I'm out in the cold. This definately seems like it. Gonna get another one soon, and I think it would make a great gift for an avid hunter or backcountry hiker. |
